How to style yourself for a brand photoshoot.

So you’ve established that you are in need of new images of yourself to use in your business or brand. You know you want to look chic, stylish and professional, but when you look in your wardrobe you feel overwhelmed in deciding what to wear. Is this you? If so, I have some good news - coming up with styling options for your photoshoot doesn’t have to be overwhelming, time consuming or stressful.

Let’s break down 5 tips and tricks on how to identify the ideal types of styling looks that will work for you in your brand photos.

Firstly, wear what you feel comfortable in (always!)

In order to shoot images of yourself that you love, you need to feel comfortable in what you are wearing. This is something that I always stress to the people that I work with; in order for you to love your images, you need to feel happy and as comfortable as possible in front of the camera. Think about whether you have a go-to outfit that you gravitate towards on work days or in your day to day life.

When in doubt, keep it simple.
Simple, natural tones are always a great staple option to wear. Think black and white as well as natural earthy tones like cream, beige and browns. To keep with earthy tones, you can also look at navy, blues, greens and soft pink or orange tones if you like wearing these kinds of colours. If you like wearing denim jeans (black or blue) try pairing this with a linen shirt or plain top. If you are like me (a dress and skirt person!) pick out a plain coloured dress or skirt. Any fine jewellery (gold or silver) can also work with your look so long as it doesn’t draw too much attention in your photos.

Identify your primary brand colour.

Take a look at your brand guidelines and identify whether your brand has any hero colours. This could be a colour that is bold, bright and vibrant such as yellow, orange, green or pink. It’s always a great option to hero a brand colour that features in your business if you believe it’s appropriate with your brand style and aesthetic. The trick is not to go overboard with colour. For example, if your brand colour is a bold yellow, try having one piece of clothing that reflects this such as a yellow top, yellow blazer or even yellow shoes. When you have identified which clothing option you are making your statement piece, pair this with natural tones such as white, cream, black and navy.

Have multiple options.

This isn’t just for decision making on the day of your shoot to determine what to wear. When shooting your photos, we want to create as much diversity as possible in order for you to be able to maximise the use of your images within your business. Multiple clothing options means that we can shoot a range of images that look cohesive but vary your content. For a standard brand shoot, aim for 2-3 different outfit options. If you do have the ability to bring along more outfit options then do so - it’s always great to have more options rather than less.

Don’t own something you like? That’s okay, borrow it.

If you are just not feeling like you have anything in your wardrobe that will work in conveying your business or brand in a professional style, there are always other ways to source the types of looks you would like to wear. You can look at renting a key piece of clothing or full outfit look from a rental styling brand such as Glamcorner or All the Dresses. If you don’t have the option of paying to rent clothing, ask one of your stylish friends (we all know someone!) who can let you borrow some of their clothes for your shoot. If there is a particular local fashion brand or designer within your area, you could always reach out to them to see if they would be happy loaning out some of their clothing to you in exchange for some of the final, edited images. This is also a great way of starting to build a supportive and collaborative relationship with a business or brand that inspires you.
